How to Play Hearts

The Goal

Hearts is all about avoiding points, not collecting them. Every Heart you win costs you 1 point, and the dreaded Queen of Spades hits you for 13. When someone's total reaches the end-game score (100 by default), the player with the fewest points wins.

Dealing & Passing Cards

All 52 cards are dealt evenly - 13 per player. Before each round begins, you pick 3 cards to pass to another player. The pass direction rotates each round: Left → Right → Across → Hold. On a Hold round, everyone keeps their hand as dealt.

Playing a Trick

The player holding the 2 of Clubs leads the very first trick of each round. After that, the winner of each trick leads the next. You must follow the led suit if you have it. When you can't, you may discard any card - though on the very first trick of a round you cannot dump Hearts or the Queen of Spades.

Breaking Hearts

Hearts cannot be led until they are broken - meaning someone has already discarded a Heart on a previous trick. Once that happens, Hearts are in play and can lead any trick.

Shooting the Moon

If one bold player collects all 26 point cards - every Heart plus the Queen of Spades - in a single round, every other player receives 26 points instead. This is called shooting the moon. It's risky, but a round-turner when it lands.

Quick Strategy Tips

  • The Queen of Spades is dangerous - pass it away early if you can.
  • High spades (Ace, King) risk pulling in the Queen. Offload them in the passing phase.
  • Lead low cards to keep control of who wins tricks.
  • Watch the other players - if someone seems to be collecting every Heart, consider sacrificing a trick to stop them before they shoot the moon.

Play Hearts Classic Online - Free, No Download

Hearts Classic brings the beloved trick-taking card game straight to your browser. Whether you're a longtime fan or picking up the game for the first time, you'll find everything you need here: authentic rules, smart AI opponents, and a clean table that works on any screen.

What Makes Hearts Tick

Hearts is a game of careful avoidance. Every round, 52 cards are dealt among four players. Your job is simple in theory - don't collect Hearts or the Queen of Spades. In practice, it takes real skill to manage your hand, time your discards, and keep an eye on what everyone else is doing.

Four Levels of AI Challenge

Our AI opponents range from Easy (good for beginners learning the ropes) to Expert (a Monte Carlo-powered engine that plans several tricks ahead). You can mix difficulty levels at the table, so a new player can sit alongside a tougher bot.

Classic Rules, Faithfully Followed

Hearts Classic follows standard rules: the 2 of Clubs opens every round, Hearts can't be led until broken, and the Queen of Spades carries 13 points. The passing phase rotates left, right, across, and hold. And yes - shooting the moon is very much possible.
